Knowledge management in technology-oriented companies

In most cases, some of the collective know-how within a company ends up in heterogeneous systems with little structure whilst the rest falls by the wayside. The purpose of knowledge management processes and systems is to provide a practical remedy by supporting staff in the task of collecting, processing and utilizing knowledge and expertise available in the company.

Goal
  • To identify best practice solutions for in-company knowledge management
  • To analyze software solutions in order to support the corresponding processes
  • To look to solutions which will be required in the future to support (partially) automated generation, storage, structure and application of knowledge
Approach
  • Hold a kick-off meeting to define key areas of interest in the project
  • Convene at least one working meeting to discuss the previous outcomes and to decide on which direction the next project phase should take
  • Possibly extend an invitation to external specialist speakers
  • Organize a wrap-up meeting to consolidate project outcomes
Agile hardware development

The process of adapting (sector)-specific “agile” approaches to suit the particular characteristics of hardware developments in a given company, presents a challenge to many companies.

Goal
  • To convey the basic principles of agile methods and design thinking
  • To review potential rigorously at various stages of development (fuzzy front end through to systematic development of series production)
  • To identify any barriers to implementation of agile approaches
  • To develop approaches to implementation at principle, process and method levels

Structuring and operating in-company incubators

In practice, despite good infrastructure and available budget, incubators are frequently unable to exploit their full potential. The reasons for this include a lack of entrepreneurial spirit among staff, a lack of acceptance in the organization, insufficient expertise in the methods to be applied or a lack of processes for feedback to series development

Goal
  • To identify options for the design and operation of incubators as well as to define the interface to the company.
  • To highlight best practices and “flops” in the design and operation of incubators
  • To derive recommended courses of action
Approach
  • Convene kick-off meeting to define the key areas of interest in the project
  • Hold at least one workshop to discuss the results achieved up till this point and the direction which the next phase in the project should take
  • Possibly invite external specialist speakers
  • Arrange wrap-up meeting to consolidate the project outcomes
